Life in upm

Yo…! To all my friends who I met and commuted before, it has been century since I post something on blog. All these are not without a reason.

After all these time in University Putra Malaysia I has experience all kind of stuff I have never experience before, for good and bad.

Ok, let me talks about people here first. Generally, I have met all kind of people here:
• The people that fooling around in UPM and not knowing what is their purpose in here. I daresay, they just want to enjoy in here.
• The people that is power crazy in politics, their do whatever they can to climb up high in UPM without making benefit for mankind and humanity. (Can you see the madness?? Just to become top of UPM for a few months. Don’t they have better things to do?)
• The people who like money so much, they started their own business in here. (They generate money from all kind of method. Eg, selling burger (selling all those kind of stuff), they have all those kind of alternative for this purposes.)
• The people who like to manipulate things around to suite their likings. These people like politics also. (Maybe, these people don’t have the skill to survive in that field.)
• The people who just want to study in UPM. (They have no life!!!)
• The people who like their society, club, so much that they sacrifices their academic result for their society/club’s goods. PS: The context I’m talking about is about the society/club that rarely brings good to mankind. And not all society/club is like that!

These are the extreme people I have meet in UPM. And that is not all, there are more to count and be describe. Just that I couldn’t do it all.

I tell you my friends, most of the people I have said up there↑↑ have no sense of purpose “Of why they want to enter university, what are they going to do after university”. For me, I view them as the waste of money and knowledge!!

But though, there are still a lot people do well in Uni. Well, at least they are good enough to find equilibrium between everything in U.

Entering university for me is like a maze, it is easy for you to lose your own directions unknowingly. If you didn’t set your own priority right, you will definitely lose your own directions to all those things around you. (Or rather say your priority in university will be shifting according to others. Or properly keep on shifting as time changes)

When you first get into university, those senior in there will properly say that time management is the most important skill to attain, and they will also say that this you will learn in university. (But I didn’t see much of them have it as well.)

Well, after I have been there for one year. I think should say this for those who wish to excel in university.

First things, before you enter university, you should get your thought and mindset straight. To get this done, you have to ask yourselves why you want to get into university for. What are your aims to achieve? How do you see yourselves after you graduate? What will you do after you graduate? What do you want for you own life? Ask more about yourselves and search inside of yourselves. This is important as you needs to have you mindset, thought and aims set as firm as possible.

Be confidence in yourselves and fight for your aims.

Then, you need to set your own priority according your aims that have been set by you. This is to prevent you from getting lost in the maze.

Then, what you needs next is you actions. The actions that you make use of to achieve you aims. You have to think what kind of actions you wish to carry out to make sure you reach your goals. That will depends on you and what you want.

After that, you need to learn three things: self-discipline, self-management, and continuality. Self-management, manages your health, manage your time, and manage everything that is about you.

For me, self-discipline and continuality is inter-related. You got to have self-discipline to continue your actions, goals. This is important as you need self-discipline to prevent you from slacken or slow down on your actions to reach your goals. As there is an old saying: to make an effort is easy, but to continue your effort is demanding. (As you need high self-discipline to achieve that.)

China Trip AIO

15-12-2006,
The first time in my life to be seated comfortably on a cushion chair looking at airport’s exterior through small framed window. Guess what? I’m actually in the aeroplane!!!! Oh boy, oh boy!! Never expected it to be so early!!
Get back to business.
Well, the family and I are going on a trip to shanghai!! We, whole group of us which include others whom follow the trip, arrived at Pudong International Airport at about 1600 and done everything and ready to be on the fastest train on earth, Shanghai Maglev Train (上海磁浮列车). The speed indicator showed the train’s top speed is over 400km/h. But you won’t feel a thing at this speed while you sit comfortably inside and looking the view outside through the windows. It just feel slow, but yet it is!
Arriving at other side of the Pudong (浦东), the sun is starting to set… But it is only 5.00pm on my watch. Well, don’t get confused. There is no different between the time in shanghai and K.L.. And this is because now is the winter time, which mean daytime are shorter and night time are longer. Sky becomes dark when time reaches 5.30pm.
Then we wait for the tour bus to pick us up. It is marvellous to see how shanghai has developed into a great metropolis. Maybe, during the journey from maglev and the tour bus you might feel you are back in K.L. (well, at least I do). The highway have four lane, the traffics are terrible (even in highway), the amount of car in shanghai alone will make your say wow!! Yup!! It is a modern city alright, expect that it is a lot bigger than K.L. and the population in shanghai is almost equal to population in Malaysia. << (This is what tour guide claimed to be.)
One thing I did marvel at, the transportation network in Shanghai. Some of the road-bridge is built several km across the city which enables you to have a high view of the city during night time. Even it is a modern city, remnant of old buildings still coexist with the modern. Some of them are built for commercial, and some of them are there for a long time. This made part of the city unique, and magnificent in its very own way.
If you are on the bus, looking through the window, there is some contrast that you will surely notice along the highway. Bicycles vs cars, modern high raises vs small houses, modern buildings vs old buildings, and most importantly, night view and day view.
Things in Pudong are different now, compared to 16 years ago. In fact, there is a huge difference. It is amazing to see how pudong became one of the most modern cities in china in just short period of time. (Pudong is part of Shanghai.)
Old times saying : 宁要浦西一张床,不要浦东一间房。
Now : 宁要浦东一张床,不要浦西一间房。
(Those word is what tour guide told to us, to compare puxi’s and pudong’s past and present. )
Well, we when to Oriental Pearl Tower 东方明珠塔 after dinner. The view from the top is marvellous. But sadly, the weather is foggy, can’t see much.
But before that, we when to a night street market in Shanghai. I have never know night market can be so beautiful. It is called 南京路 Nanjing Road.

16-12-2006
It is the second day in china, waking up by the sound of the ringing telephone. Looking back at the day before, I found it is strange in china at this time around, winter time, compared to the place I used to be. Now, is so cold that I seek to do things I won’t do in tropical country, like wear thick jacket, seek to exposed under the sun, avoid strong wind, on the “hot air conditioner”, and seek hot foods. The word “hot” has become more valuable for me after the trip. But the whole trip is without presence of snow, nice and yet regrettable.
We went to Xishan 西山 today. Well, I didn’t know much about this place. But all I know is you can see the remnant of old from both side of the road. Well, it makes me thinks a lot of how this place was used to be.
Next stop:
石公山, Shigong hill.
There is nothing I can say about this place, except that it is very beautiful. Nice scenery too. You can have a full view of the vast lake. It is so vast that you can’t even see the end. (Maybe that day is too foggy.) On the side of the hill, there is massive amount of rocks, and there is a good reason for it. Ancient time, they “harvest” these rocks for their garden.
林屋古洞,Linwu Cave.
For introduction, I think you can search for it.
From my point of view, this is a magnificent sight! It is a total different paradise you can even imagine. It makes me felt like being separated from the world. Well, one thing I know is that you have to be there to see through my point of view.
After lunch, we when to Suzhou 苏州.
This city is very unique. It is not like a little Shanghai compared to other city which we will visit later on. The three rules must be obey by all the buildings in that city. 1) Cannot be higher than a certain high. 2) Walls must be painted white. 3) Roofs must be in black in colour. This make Suzhou more unique than in any other place.
Tiger Hill, 虎丘
Tiger hill is situated on the north-western outskirts of Suzhou.
Almost every rock on that area has the story of its own. Interesting story. Well, I can’t tell you every story as I barely remember it. There you can find the tomb of one of the four gorgeous beauty of the ancient time. There you can find slanting pagoda on top of its hill with its very own story to tell. Interesting place.

17-12-2006
After the breakfast, we moved on to the next destination. The “Lion Grove Garden” 狮子林.
Lion Grove Garden is one of the most famous gardens in Suzhou. That place is full of decorative rocks and it is very gorgeous. The fusion of rock with man made lake create an astounding environment in the centre of the garden. All I can say is, this ancient garden is very very very beautiful. Oh ya, famous architectural live near here before.
Before leaving Suzhou, we visit silk factory over there. It was interesting to see how they made different kinds of silk.
After lunch, we moved on to next city named Wuxi 无锡.
This modern city is very modern indeed!! Not much of the difference compare to buildings in Shanghai, only in lesser scale. But it did look cleaner.
三国城,The Three Kingdoms City
Well, basically it is the city that is established for shooting the TV series “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”,《三国演义》。Same, nothing special about this place but just that it made you remember some of the scene you seen before on some series. Scenery is ok. (There is a language limitation for me to describe scenery on the places I have visited.)

18-12-2006
Morning’s event has become routine after 3 days. My body seem to get used to the coldness outside, and yet I seek the hottest air inside any buildings.
Funny, in Malaysia, you seek “cold air conditioner”. Winter, you seek “Hot air conditioner”. It feels strange if you let hot air brushes through your face. I found this new concept less comfortable but I know I am much better if air is warmer. (I put on the max temperature)
And my father jokes with his new friends on the same tour:
In Malaysia, you don’t let the cold air escape outside of the building.
In Winter China, you don’t let the cold air get inside of the building.
The weather has become less windy compared to earlier days. Strong wind is irritating during winter. It can make your hands & face numb in just a few minute. Winter isn’t as wet (humid) as you think it would be. It gets so dry that it makes my lips crack and my face burn a little.
Next destination, The Giant Buddha in Mt. Lingshan, 灵山大佛
The 88 metres high Lingshan Buddha is the greatest standing bronze Buddha statue in China. All I can say is, it is really big. You will have to climb quite a step up to get to the top.
This is my opinion; under the big Buddha what I saw is that the big Buddha looking down at tiny human below with compassion. The Buddha’s hand seems to offer aids for whoever needs it. Another feeling I get about it is that, no matter how powerful you are, you will still looking up at the Buddha and the Buddha is still looking down with compassion. The closer it get, the bigger it seems. It seems trying to give you a message.
Ps: it is just an opinion.
After lunch, we proceed to Nanjing 南京, the capital of Jiangsu 江苏. We had quite a long journey just to go to Nanjing. If you look back of the history of Nanjing, you will find that this city since the ancient time people claim this place has a very good fengshui. Because of this, many wars has launch against Nanjing by the greed of men. This has caused Nanjing to be less developed in the past. Nanjing only finds its true peace after the end of dynasty. My opinion, if the fengshui is very good, then Nanjing supposed to be peaceful and prosperous since the ancient times without the disturbance of wars.
Then, we visit a magnificent bridge embedded with great determination and pride of Chinese. This bridge is Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, 南京长江大桥. This bridge has an interesting past of how she being built and why she is? This bridge is quite high as well. A product of Chinese’s pride.
After dinner, we went to visit Confucius Temple Night Market 夫子庙夜市. When you talk about the market in china, most of us will certainly expect things to be very cheap. Well, it was but not now. Past few days in other city, we did shopping on the street. Conclusion we get is that things is not cheap, some of them is even more expensive than Malaysia’s. And this place is no less. Except one thing, the jackets made out of duck’s feathers. Forgot to tell you, Nanjing is “Duck capital” 鸭都。When I talk about ducks in Nanjing it means ducks in positive view, folks! Duck industry in Nanjing is gigantic. Hence, it supply a lot of duck’s feather.
What is the famous food in Nanjing? 南京咸水鸭。

19-12-2006
Morning, this is the fifth breakfast is the whole trip. I started to get bored of the food prepared by hotel. Almost every breakfast we ate has the same pattern. Maybe, taste of the food is not suitable for Malaysian. Maybe…
After breakfast,
中山陵 Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is our next trip. Built during 1926 and 1929, the 73-meter tall mausoleum lies 159 meters above sea level. This mausoleum is designed with the intention to convey messages to his people in China. The mausoleum is very magnificent and the environment is perfect; it makes me wonder how grand would the works be to finish this and how much fortune it cost to build this.
Ps: i messed up the time. Actually, we visit Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge this morning and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Muasoleum yesterday evening.
Then we proceed to the national museum in Nanjing. It showed that entire priceless artifact which you will be marvel at it. A little history of how Jed is made of is included as well. Their museum is well organised and grand.
After lunch, we arrived at Four Scenes of Tai City Wall 台城四景. Basically, it is the ancient city wall that protects Nanjing from attacked. We walk up to the top of the well preserved city wall to take a look at the scenery and a side view of the city.
Each stone that built the city wall, has the names of the superior and his workers who made stones to built city wall. The name is not for a good purpose but for a cruel intention. It is for the authority to know who work is this if the stone is out of standard. Usually, if even one stone is failed to meet is standard, the superior and his workers will be executed. Because of this, not many of those who joined this project survive until it is finish.
After lunch, we went to Hangzhou 杭州. I am sure almost everyone has heard of it. Hangzhou is one of the most beautiful garden cities in the world. This city has nice environment to live in. Especially when you talk about scenery in West lake 西湖。

20-12-2006
Waking up in the morning with sleepiness rule over me, this is the feeling which I have used to after 5 days. Even if I slept for more than 6 hours, sleepiness hardly gets out of my head. (I can still even sleep on the tour bus after 5 minutes) I guess this is winter. Maybe it is the cold weather that drains you a lot of energy. I think our body needs to maintain a certain heat inside by raising our metabolism which makes us feel tired. Thus, I made up a conclusion, coldness = tiredness.
I was a sleepy head on the tour bus, but I tried to stay up so I can observe as much as possible on the journey between cities. But soon, I give up after half and hour. One thing I can be sure, we travelled a lot on a highway.
Next stop, West Lake 西湖.
It is the most beautiful place on the entire trip. The best scenery is in here. This is made possible because of Su Dongpo 苏东坡. Well, you can find out why. This lake is full of romantic story; one of them is “Butterfly Love Story” (I hope I get the name correct.). This place is the paradise. We had a boat ride around West Lake.
坐请坐请上坐,
茶上茶上好茶。
There is an interesting story behind this. You should find out more. It is written by Su Dongpo in Hangzhou.
Then, just beside West Lake, located The Memorial Hall of Su Dongpo 苏东坡纪念馆. This hall has collections of poems, calligraphy and painting, statuary and inscriptions on the tablets.
We had our lunch in a very famous restaurant named, Lou Wai Lou 楼外楼. Heard before? I think some of you heard it before. It has a very long history.
Continue, we moved on to Yue Fei Temple 岳飞庙. This temple was built in honor of General Yue Fei, a national hero of the Southern Song dynasty. The temple is grand and consists of beautiful gardens. I did learn an additional history of Yue Fei. I think most of the people did heard of Yue Fei with the famous tattoo, “精忠报国” right?

21-12-2006
Wake up in the early morning with drowsiness still playing in my head, not wanting to move. But I still force myself to do morning routine, because I know I don’t want to miss a thing today.
We are going to Wuzhen Water Village 乌镇水乡after breakfast. I am always eager to go there with enthusiastic curiosity to know what China looks like 1300 years ago. Wuzhen is one of the well preserved ancient villages in China. Now it has been commercialized for tourism. I don’t how to describe but it makes me feel like I have entered ancient times of China.
After lunch, we travel back to Shanghai.
After arrived at Shanghai, we visited a shopping paradise named城隍庙 Temple Business Centre. Entire area is full with buildings that have the appearance of Ancient Street hundred years ago. This shopping area is very unique and absolutely beautiful, especially when night has fall. It is decorated with beautiful light that surround almost every buildings. Even Starbuck has adopted the appearance of Chinese culture. Marvellous!! Of course, stuffs in here come in a high price.
Then after dinner, we cruised on a peaceful river that separated Puxi and Pudong. There we have a magnificent night view of the both side of the river; this is the night scenery of Shanghai. Absolutely magnificent!
After the cruise, we visited the picturesque Bund, the symbol of Shanghai. We took a lot of picture there. But nothing came out right compared to what I see, sad…
Tonight, will be the last night in Shanghai. What a magnificent way to end a night!

22-12-2006
Last morning in China, I had already fed up with the breakfast. After the breakfast, I tried to enjoy as much under the cold weather with a slight breeze in the air. For I know, this is the last day in China before went back to the warm air country. This is the last day before you wore jacket or without during winter. I did hope for snow to come down, but to my dismay, it didn’t happen.
We did a little shopping (but buy nothing) on the street whatever name it is. Stuffs in China are not cheap anymore. Living cost in China has increased. Somebody says it is because of the Olympic Game in 2008. Somebody says it is because China is moving forward.
Then, we have lunch. After that, we went back to Shanghai Pudong International Airport on time. Around 1600-1700, the plane took off. Arriving at KLIA around 2100-2200, and arrived at home with tired body at 2330.
That is the end of the trip.
Last destination: my bed.
